Alaska's Glaciers
In August of 2008 we took the kids on an Alaska Cruise, and these are some of the photos from Glacier Bay. The first two photographs are of the Margerie Glacier, which is advancing and calving into the Bay. The third photograph is of a nearby retreating glacier (if I remember correctly it is called the Carroll Glacier). Flipping through my photo gallery this winter weekend, I also came up with a short panoramic video clip of the view from the ship. Would I cruise again? Not so sure - but I must admit the vantage point was quite unbeatable.

The video is great. The ice glaciers are looking so much fantastic and amazing.
I don't really have the desire to go cruising, but I always thought that if I did, that Alaska would be the place I would cruise to. It seems like you would get such a great view from a ship.
Great scenes you captured there btw.
wow, amazing photos! Views like that make me want to go there and I am not even a huge fan of cold places:)
This is one of my bucket list destination. It's not that I love winter or snow but just the fact that the glacier has been retreating make me want to visit before it's too late. :)
Cruising is probably the best option for us. I don't mind cruising.. actually I love cruising. :)
I have never cruised. Partly due to my massive motion sickness and partly because I am not sure I would like it. I do, however, think the cruise you took would be high on my list. I want to see Alaska and viewing glaciers from the water is pretty amazing. Incidently- why are you not sure you would cruise again?
Hey Sharlene - although there were lots of great benefits and conveniences onboard, I also like space and felt that 2000+ people in such close proximity was a little too close for comfort (long lines to get on and off the ship, lines for dining, etc.). It all depends what you are looking for - but it was certainly a good tool for seeing Alaska.
The ice pictures are amazing! I agree with Maria in that I usually have enough of cold places after about 5 minutes! But your fabulous photos are very tempting. What kind of wildlife did you see?
Thanks for sharing!
Wow. The video is great. Makes me want to go. Curious though, how was cruising with the two kids?
Hey Jill - the kids actually loved it! There is a kids club on board and our 5 year old wanted to spend time there with the other kids. Our 3 year old was still more excited about being with us, so I'd suspect that a sweet spot age for cruising is 5+.
