Humpback Whales in Monterey Bay

Whales were making the news over Thanksgiving weekend, so I drove to Monterey to investigate. An influx of anchovies attracted them to the bay, extending their normal summer season. Sure enough, they were still there early December. Our boat motored 13 miles from Fisherman's Wharf to Monterey Canyon (a mile or more deep!). These nutrient rich and protected waters are a feeding playground for stoic humpback families. At one point, I didn't know which direction to turn, as 7 to 8 whales were all around us. I'm already planning a January trip during the gray whale migration. For charters, check out Monterey Whale Watching.
